Members of the Georgia Tech women's tennis team were in action last weekend at the ITA/Rolex Southern Regional Tournament in Jackson, Mississippi.
Hosted by the University of Mississippi, the tournament was the squad's final competition for the 1997 calendar year. The season resumes on January 23 at the ACC Indoor Championships in Chapel Hill, North Carolina.
Senior Christelle Ursulet; juniors Sybi Parker, Xenia Uy, and Autumn Richards; sophomore Tamarra Jenkin; and freshman Bobbi Guthrie represented Tech at the ITA/Rolex Tournament.
Urselet, the only Tech player to be seeded in the tournament, advanced to the fourth round of the singles bracket with two strong victories, including a two-set triumph over Natalie Carratala of Florida State.
Urselet was the only Lady Jacket to win in the singles bracket; however, Uy and Richards advanced to the third and fourth rounds of the consolation bracket, respectively.
The Yellow Jackets did not fare well in the doubles tournament either, as only the Uy-Guthrie pair could gain a victory.
On a positive note, the Uy and Guthrie win was also against Florida State opponents. Looking ahead to the Florida State match at home on February 21, Tech could have an opportunity to notch a key mid-season ACC win.
After the long winter break, the Jackets' team match schedule begins. Tech's first home match is January 31 versus Middle Tennessee State, and the conference schedule opens up with the afore mentioned match against Florida State.
The men's tennis team is competing in the Rolex Regional Championships in Chapel Hill this weekend. The tournament also marks the fall finale for them as well. They resume play on January 21 in the Futures Invitational.
