Former Tech golf star Duval tops three successive PGA tournaments
Former Georgia Tech golf star David Duval has become one of the hottest players on the PGA Tour. Duval, who had not won a tournament in his first 92 career starts, put together three consecutive victories at the end of this year. Duval grabbed his first career title at the Michelob Championship, followed that with a victory the next week at the Walt Disney Classic, and capped his run by winning the expensive Tour Championships. He became the first player on the tour to win three consecutive starts since Nick Price accomplished the feat in 1993. His strong finish earned him a total of $977,079 for the year, the most prize money ever won for a second year player. His finish was also reflected in the World Golf Rankings this year as he jumped from 19th in the world to 13th.
Garciaparra captures American League Rookie of Year title
Former Georgia Tech baseball sensation Nomar Garciaparra made his mark on the major leagues this year as he captured the American League Rookie of the Year Award as a shortstop for the Boston Red Sox. He was a unanimous choice for the award as he had a .306 batting average with 30 home runs and 98 RBI. He became only the sixth unamimous selection. His 30 home runs were the most by a rookie shortstop His 98 RBI set a major league record for the most by a leadoff hitter. He had a 30 game hitting streak this season, tied for the longest of any player this season and the second longest in RedSox history. Garciaparra, who was also named to the AL All-Star team this year, was the first Red Sox player in 22 years to win the award.
