'Chasing Away the Blues' will benefit mental health education programs

In an effort to reduce the stigma surrounding mental illness and to educate the public about mental health issues, the Resource Network Group of the Mental Health Association of Metropolitan Atlanta (MHAMA) is sponsoring the first annual Chasing Away the Blues concert and silent auction fundraiser Sunday, November 9, 1997 from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Roswell Mill.

More than 576,000 Atlantans are affected by mental disorders each year. Because mental illness crosses all racial, economic and social boundaries, MHAMA has recruited an eclectic mix of rock, blues and contemporary R&B artists for this occasion. Adriana Evans, the R&B/jazz female vocalist, and Guadalcanal Diary, the alternative band best known for their hit Watusi Rodeo, will headline the event. In addition local favorites Sandra Hall, "The Empress of Blues," and India, "Lady of Acoustic Soul," will add their own flavor of entertainment to the concert.

Proceeds from this event will support the MHAMA's efforts to educate the community about mental illness and reduce the stigma associated with it. These programs include "I Can Problem Solve," a conflict resolution course for elementary-aged children. It will also support Care Management, a program to address the needs of homeless persons suffering with a mental illness, and community education about mental health and mental disorders. Chasing Away the Blues was developed by RiNG (Resource Network Group) a professional organzation designed to support the mission of MHAMA. Media sponsors for Chasing Away the Blues are KISS 104.7 and MindSpring Enterprises.
