Wreck and roll rock the shaft

Students walking to class last Thursday were greeted by "The Battle of the Bands." Seeing how there only two bands, it was more of a skirmish than a battle.

The winner of the Battle of the Bands was determined by the students in attendance. Instead of voting for one band or the other, students were asked to rate each band on a scale of one to ten, one being "bad" and ten being "great."

Schwa, a good 'ol modern rock and roll band, strutted their stuff first. Despite sound difficulties, Schwa sported their flava. What really impressed me about them was their ability to draw the crowd. On any given day, there wouldn't have been half as many students at the fountain as there were on Thursday at 11:00

Unlike "big time" concerts, the transition period between bands was relatively small. Soon after Schwa went off, Five and a Half Years came on. I say the two bands were mismatched because of the playing styles. Five and a Half Years is more of a vocal/acoustic band. They focused more on the melody and less on the "foot tapping" beat. This band also played well, but didn't seem to have that crowd drawing ability that Schwa did.

The Shaft, being out in an open area, may not have been the most ideal concert hall location, but was in the perfect position to attract everyone's attention. The music was reported by some to have been reverberated all the way to Skiles.

Everything considered, it was a typical 90210 episode. Everyone on campus was chillin' in the main gathering area having a great time. What's up with Kelly's amnesia anyway? The Battle of the Bands was a welcomed break from classes and was enjoyed by all. If it can be arranged to get more bands for next time, Schwa, the winner of the battle, might have some more competition.
