Georgia Tech Facilities will be closing Cherry Street from Ferst Drive to Power Plant Drive on October 27 to replace a leaking steam line. The street will remained closed to vehicular traffic until the middle of December.
The buildings affected by the line are D. M. Smith, L. W. Chapin, Coon, Savant, Swann, ESM, Guggenheim Aeronautics, and Montgomery Knight Aerospace Engineering.
Workers might cut off steam to these buildings for three to four hour periods.
The new line will be a six-inch pipe placed three feet under Cherry Street and will run from the Savant building to the Dean of Students building. Officials do not anticipate any major problems with the project.
During the work, Stinger A and Stinger B will continue west on North Avenue where they normally turn right onto Techwood Drive. They will proceed to turn right onto Cherry Street, then left to rejoin their regular route.
Stinger D will leave its regular route by turning from Ferst Drive onto Tech Parkway just past the Student Athletic Complex. It will then turn left on to North Avenue, and left onto Techwood Drive before rejoining the regular route at the intersection of Techwood Drive and Third Street.
John Nolte, Director of Parking and Transportation, does not anticipate major problems with Stinger service. "I think the biggest change is going to be for those people that were coming to the library on Stinger A and B; that is one of the busiest routes," Nolte said. "They are going to have to go from Techwood Drive up to Williams Street to pick up the bus."
While the stem line work blocks Cherry Street, Facilities will install "collegiate" style street lighting along Cherry Street. "The lighting levels are going to be a major enhancement to safety on campus," said Alexander.
