The women's tennis team sent nine players last weekend to Bruegger's Collegiate Classic in Columbus, Ohio. In 46 matches, Tech women went 26-20, with one singles player and one doubles tandem making the finals.
Senior Autumn Richards, sophomore Tamarra Jenkin, and freshman Bobbie Guthrie led the Jackets with three victories a piece. Richards, after a win by default and two wins by 6-2, 6-2 and 6-3, 7-6 scores, reached the final before bowing to a player from Colorado, 6-2, 6-2.
Guthrie, impressive as a freshman, beat competitors from Wyoming, Colorado, and Kansas, with her loss in the semifinals to a Rice player. Jenkin likewise made the semifinals, beating a player from Virginia Commonwealth and two from Ohio State.
"Autumn did well for us and put on a solid performance," fourth-year coach Sue Hutchinson commented, "and Bobbie as a freshman has been a pleasant surprise. We did pretty well."
Christelle Ursulet, a senior who transferred from Jacksonville before this season, added two wins.
Originally from the island of Martinique, Ursulet came to Tech to complete a double-major degree in physics and electrical engineering. She is also the only ranked collegiate player on the squad, ranked 63rd recently.
Also claiming victories for Tech were Sara Griffin, Sybi Parker, Leila Pradhan, and Xenia Uy.
On the doubles side, Jenkin and Ursulet teamed up for the first time ever and made it all the way to the finals. The tandem defeated competition from Notre Dame, Indiana, and Purdue before falling to Virginia Commonwealth, 8-4. Also getting wins in doubles were Parker-Richards and Uy-Guthrie.
The women do not play this weekend, but host a very competitive field in the Holiday Inn Midtown North Invitational the following weekend. The SEC, ACC, and Big 10 will be represented.
