The Georgia Tech tennis teams took part in their fair share of action last weekend, when the men's team participated in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Region II Tennis Championships and the women's team took part in the Yellow Jacket/Holiday Inn Midtown North Women's Tennis Invitational.
On Thursday evening, which was the first day of the men's tournament, Benjamin Cassaigne and Matt Cozad teamed up to defeat Virginia's Huntley Montgomery and Brian Hunter 9-7 in doubles play at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Complex on the campus of the University of North Carolina. Cassaigne and Cozad, the tournament's number 3 seed and the nation's 18th-ranked doubles team, advanced to the second round of the 32-team doubles tournament where they lost to Eric Jackson and Devang Desai of N.C. State on Friday.
The duo also competed in singles play on Friday. Cassaigne defeated UNC Charlotte's Jan Pollmuller 6-1, 6-2 to advance to the second round of play in the ITA Championships. Cozad, however, fell to Duke's Doug Root, the nation's 13th-ranked player, 6-3, 6-4. Romain Coirault also fell in the opening round of singles. He lost to Duke's Jordan Wile, 6-4, 7-6.
Cassaigne was eventually eliminated in the third round of singles play on Saturday. He won his first match of the day against Roop Kalaio of East Carolina, 6-1, 6-2, but failed to advance to the quarterfinals when he lost to Vearverud in the third round, 3-6, 5-7.
The women's team experienced their share of success as well. Sophomore Bobbi Guthrie defeated Rice's Elle Lewis to capture the flight "A" singles championship on Sunday, which was the third and final day of their invitational tournament.
Additionally, Guthrie teamed with Xenia Uy to down the 28th-ranked doubles team of Erin Wolverton and Shera Wiegler of Iowa, 8-4, in a consolation match.
Sybi Parker and Laura Ozolins both won their consolation matches in flight "B" and flight "C" singles, respectively. Parker topped Claudia Aguilar of Baylor, 6-4, 4-6, 7-6, and Ozolins downed Kristen Nicholls of N.C. State, 6-2, 6-2.
Tamarra Jenkin won her flight "C" singles consolation match, as well. Further success was found when Autumn Richards and Mason Miller teamed to win their flight "B" doubles consolation.
