Ice Hockey Club sweeps two games from Florida
Georgia Tech's ice hockey team traveled to Gainesville last weekend for a two-game series with the Florida Gators, last year's regular season championships. On Friday, the Yellow Jackets won their first game outside the state of Georgia for the first time in two seasons as they held back the Gators 9-6. Tech took an early 4-0 lead before Florida finally tied the game at 5-5 midway through the 2nd period. Monal Dhabliwala scored on the power play at 9:42 to give Georgia Tech the lead for good. Shawn Montague led all scorers with 4 goals and 4 assists, while Tim Jones of Florida also had 4 goals .
On Saturday, the Yellow Jackets completed a two game sweep with an impressive 9-1 victory over the defending champions. Tech had a 6-0 lead after the first period with Ryan Dawe leading the way with a hat trick. He finished the evening with 3 goals and 4 assists. John Fleming added three goals as well as the Jackets' offense controlled the play for most of the game, keeping pressure on the Florida goalie. Chris Melton was denied a shutout by a late third period goal as he turned away 13 shots.
Women's Basketball signs two players for next year
Georgia Tech's women's basketball team added a pair of players for next season as head coach Agnus Beranato announced the signings of Amy Lingenfelder (Fairfax, Va.) and Sonja Mallory (The Bronx, N.Y.) to national letters of intent Wednesday, on the first day of the early signing period. Lingenfelder, a 5-foot-8 shooting guard, was an honorable mention All-Metro selection by The Washington Post as a junior and has been W.T. Woodson High School's most valuable player each of the past three seasons. Mallory, a 6-4 center, averaged 12 points and 12 rebounds per game last year for Brooklyn Technical High School.
Women's Tennis signs local star in early signing period
According to Yellow Jacket head coach Sue Hutchinson, Mysti Morris (Cartersville, Ga.), one of the top girls tennis players in the state of Georgia, signed a national letter of intent to play for Georgia Tech women's tennis program. The announcement came Wednesday, on the first day of the early signing period. Morris attends Cartersville High School, where she claimed the 1996 and 1997 Region 7-AA singles titles. She was ranked number 32 in the south region in the 1997 girls 18-and-under USTA poll.
