Don't leave home without your Buzz Card
By Gayle Kreckman
Special to The 'Nique
The Buzz Card i s now required to gain entrance into the Student Athletic Complex (SAC). This is for all users of SAC-including faculty, staff, students, family, and friends-to ensure that only authorized people are allowed to enter. Buzz Cards are also required at both dining halls and to gain admission to football games.
As an innovative step towards increasing campus security, the Buzz Card is also now necessary to gain access to Harrison and Brown Halls. Residents will have to slide the card through a reader instead of using a key to unlock the door, thereby eliminating the chances that a random person who finds a lost key might be able to enter the dorm.
The Buzz Card is free to all faculty, staff, and students and functions both as a personal ID card and as a debit card that becomes active when the user opens a Buzz Card account. With an initial deposit of $10 or more, the user may draw upon the deposited funds to purchase products and services throughout campus. Account balance information is provided after each transaction. The user can request a balance statement from the cashier as well. Buzz Card account users may also receive discounts on goods and services from on-campus vendors such as Junior's Grill, the Student Center Food Court, Ferst Place and the cyber.cafe.
Buzz Cards can be acquired at the Buzz Card Center, located at the Houston Bookstore Mall. Hours of operation are Monday through Thursday, 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. and Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Users can open a Buzz Card account at the Card Center with a $10 deposit.
