Fernbank offers education and fun
History museum's attractions include the IMAX theater and dinosaurs
By Jay Haider

While many tend to think of Fernbank as one large science museum, it actually contains two autonomous museums, the Fernbank Science Center and the Fernbank Museum of Natural History. The Natural History museum is the bigger of the two, with 160,000 square feet of exhibits, theaters, and galleries. The floor of the natural history Museum is German granite with fossils embedded at random locations
Before you explore the interesting and educational exhibits, though, visit the IMAX theater, which has a screen taller than most Tech dorms and a powerful sound system.
Currently playing at IMAX are the films Amazon, The Living Sea, and Special Effects. Amazon is the story of two men's search in the Amazonian rainforest for new medical treatments and cures. The Living Sea is an Oscar-winning documentary about aquatic life which features a soundtrack by Sting. Special Effects uses footage from films like Star Wars, Independence Day, and Jumanji to show how movie effects are created. For IMAX show times, call (404) 370-0019.
After the IMAX theatre, go see the exhibits of the Museum of Natural History. These include "A Walk in Time Through
Georgia," an informative multimedia exhibit about the ground under and about us, "Spectrum of the Senses," which has basic but eye (or ear) catching demos of basic properties of light and sound, and "The World of Shells."
One of the better exhibits in the Natural History Museum is \"Cultures of the World,\" which includes artifacts from Iran, Pakistan, India, Tiber, China, and Afganistan. Besides the artifacts, it also includes a photo gallery of the Far Eastern travels of one Devereaux McClatchey, whose photos are of both aesthetic and historical interest.
The Fernbank Museum website, www.fernbank.edu, lists ticket prices and upcoming attractions for the museum and IMAX.
