More students will be able to play at the Bill Moore Tennis Center following the elimination of the fee instituted last Fall.
The elimination of the fee was made possible by removing $10,000 from the budget of the Student Athletic Complex (SAC).
Unlike SAC, no student fees go to the Tennis Center. All of the Tennis Center's funding comes directly from the Athletic Association.
The money that was taken out of the SAC budget will be replaced by Student Activity Fee money. On an annual basis, approximately $0.90 of each person's fee will go to the Tennis Center.
"Several proposals were considered, but this seemed to be the best," said Marc Galindo, Undergraduate Student Body President.
Those who were involved in this decision see the removal of the fee as a good thing.
The addition of the fee during Fall Quarter, along with the removal of the Woodruff tennis courts to make room for the Curran Street parking deck, left the courts on top of Peter's parking deck as the only free courts on campus. When the fee was set in place, there was a definite reduction in the number of students who used the courts.
"The fee deterred all students except for those who were really interested in tennis. Now more students will be able to use the courts," said Galindo.
"When the students were charged, they didn't go. That is all that there is to it. There was nowhere else for them to go," said Butch Stanphill, Director of SAC.
The fee was added last fall because, according to Michael Gustafson, the Tennis Center director, the Center needed to raise income in order to deal with costs such as resurfacing and lighting.
"Students deserve to be on the courts. They are top-notch, and students should feel good that they can play on such quality courts," Stanphill said.
The Bill Moore Tennis Center was reopened last Fall for the first time since the '96 Olympics.
