Football team gets a split of first two games
Defense struggles throughout dissapointing loss to Boston College in season opener

By Chris Culbreth
Prefers raves over football

While the weak point at the beginning of the season was pinpointed to be the empty wide receiver slots, most people forgot that a couple of guys named Ron and Keith graduated. The BC offensive line and running back Mike Cloud didn't. The BC offense attacked the GT defensive line, and won the battle all day long. No one was making tackles, everyone who got near enough to Cloud simply bounced off him. Until he was knocked out of the game, the leading tackler for the Jackets was Travares Tillman, the free safety.
BC took the early lead on a field goal after Tech kicker Brad Chambers hit the upright on the opening drive. BC came back in the 2nd quarter to take a 10-0 lead on a 1-yard Cloud run. Tech took the next possession 65 yards for a touchdown on an 8-yard Hamilton run. Two possessions later, a Hamilton pass was tipped at midfield and went right into the hands of linebacker Brian Maye. BC took advantage of the turnover and moved the ball downfield for a touchdown. After a 17-yard kickoff and a personal foul on BC, Tech found itself starting on the BC 37 yard line. It only took 2 passes for Hamilton to find David Powell in the end zone to make the score 17-14 BC at the half.
Tech took its first possession of the second half to the BC 6, but only got a field goal after a first and 10 from the 11. BC took the kickoff and drove downfield for a TD, and Tech did the same, mostly after Charlie Rogers took a pitch 58 yards for the score, tying the game at 24. Tech forced a stop at midfield when BC went for a 4th and 1, but Tech could not convert any points from the great starting position. In the fourth quarter, BC had its own big play, a 66-yard pass that put the Eagles on the Tech 3. BC took a 31-24 lead on a run by quarterback Scott Mutryn. Tech answered with another touchdown, this one by Ed Wilder. BC took the next possession for a field goal that put the Eagles up 34-31 with 4 minutes left. After a great kickoff return was called back to the Tech 9 yard line, Tech receivers missed 3 perfect passes and one overthrown pass to give the ball back to BC, who scored 2 minutes later for the final score.
