Parking Director gives explanation

To the Editor:
We know and agree that unregistered vehicles is the single biggest parking problem on campus. We have been working on improved designation of visitor parking, increased enforcement in as many areas as staffing allows and are working on more enforcement staff. The best solution is to prevent the violations from occurring at all. At the last Parking and Transportation Advisory Committee meeting on April 1, we presented recommendations on gating five more of the decks and lots on campus. Our proposal, which the committee endorsed, was to gate the Student Center Deck, Peters Deck, the Curran St. Deck, the A11 & A12 lots and the Plum St. A10 zone south of Ferst Drive.
Due to delays in MRDC II construction and space reductions caused by other nearby, we redesignated part of the lot west of the deck A04, A05 as well as A06. Our intent was to provide at least temporary additional parking in the area. Recently, the Office of Facilities informed me that construction on MRDC II is expected to begin May 1. Until then, the additional space is available for A04 & A05 overflow parking.
Monday was also an exceptional situation because the Institute hosted the Sam Nunn Forum, which featured speakers such as the Director of the CIA and the Chairman of IBM and attracted about 170 business leaders from the community. The appropriate place to park these guests was the Student Center Deck. At the same time, Tech was hosting a Connect with Tech Program which also brought additional guests to the area.
We recognize all the needs to park as important and work to provide the best service and facilities possible. They are not necessarily to the quality level we would like. We will continue to strive to improve.
