The Georgia Tech crew team's ACC Championship earned it the rare distinction of being featured on the back page with a photo.
Georgia Tech has an ACC championship teamthe rowing club. Beating out Clemson, Duke, North Carolina, N.C. State, and Florida State, GT Crew won its first ever ACC title past weekend in Clemson, South Carolina.
Along with the overall points trophy, the men's team brought back titles in 4+, light 8+, and open 8+. The men have won the light 8+ trophy four years in a row now and have kept the open 8+ for three straight. The open 8+ race had to be re-rowed following a protest filed against Duke for leaving its lane and interfering with the Tech boat. This lane drifting, a practice that is dangerous, seemed to be a trend for Duke, as most of their men's boats were protested throughout the day.
The women's team found success on the water despite heavy competition from the UNC women. Typically a small team, the Tech women this year had the numbers and the skill to compete with great results. Racing against bigger boats, the Jackets' 4+ and 8+ displayed power and technique in garnering a bronze and silver, respectively.
The Tech novice team also excelled with high finishes all day. With over 30 rowers, the novice team entered a team in every race, sometimes even two boats. Despite a few run-ins with wandering Duke boats, the novice men and women proved competent with potential to build for the upcoming year.
The ACC victory was actually the second in as many weeks. GT Crew claimed the team victory at the Atlanta Rowing Festival two weeks ago on the Chattahoochee in Roswell. The ARF, co-hosted by Tech, included Clemson, Tulane, UT-Chattanooga, and UNC-Wilmington. The team captured three women's, two men's, and two novice first-place finishes.
