Study in Oxford unique experience

This summer, when most students will go either home or to work, more than 150 Tech students will board planes for Europe, bound for GT Oxford. This summer study abroad program not only gives students the chance to study at one of the world's oldest and most prestigious universities, but it also includes an optional three-week tour of Europe and a one-week tour of Spain.
The program begins with a three-week tour of Europe that includes visits to cities like Berlin, Vienna, Salzburg, Zurich, Prague, Brussels and Paris. Students will take a class called " Arts and Ideas" during this tour. This class, administered by the LCC, is described as a "hands-on learning experience."
The second part of the study abroad program includes 5 weeks of classes at Oxford. Students can choose to take either three or four classes at Oxford depending on their participation in the first part of the program. All classes at Oxford are taught by Tech professors except the "Oxford Research Seminar," a class in which Oxford professors talk about their research in fields ranging from British Law to Theology. This class is offerred for pass/fail credit.
The GT Oxford program is not limited to engineering majors. Many non-engineers are on the roll for the summer because they can take English, history, international affairs, and music classes while earning humanities and social science credits.
Classes will be held on every weekday but Wednesday. Students will have the opportunity to visit sites such as Bath, Stonehenge, and London on Wednesday excursions that are included in the program fee.
Because weekends are free, many students use this time to tour the picturesque English countryside or visit London, which is about an hour away. It is not uncommon for students to venture off as far as Wales, Ireland, or Scotland for a weekend.
At Oxford, students are housed in single rooms within residence halls that range from 10-400 years old. Tech students interact with Oxford students through soccer games, golf matches, and other informal gatherings.
The last part of the program is a one-week stay at a beach resort in Pineda on the Costa Brava of Spain. Two bus trips— one to Barcelona and one to Monserat— will be provided for the group. Because Pineda de Mar is less than two hours north of Barcelona there will be opportunities for students to frequent one of Spain's most eclectic and cultural cities— the home of modernist architect Antonio Gaudi and a home to Picasso for many years.
The director of the summer study abroad program is Dr Art Koblasz, and the program manager is Heather Emmert. The registration deadline for the program, which currently has 160+ students enrolled, is March 2.
