Tennis: Women win, Men lose to Georgia
Georgia Tech's women tennis team, number 49 in the country, won against Davidson and Tulane last week, both by match scores of 6-1. The team is now 3-0. Juniors Xenia Uy and Autumn Richards, sophomore Tamarra Jenkin, and freshman Beth Guthrie all picked up a pair of wins and are undefeated on the season at 3-0.
The Jackets also won all of the doubles events. The Christelle Ursulet-Guthrie tandem is now 3-0 on the year.
"The Lady Yellow Jackets are playing well, even though we may not be at our full potential," commented Coach Sue Hutchinson.
The first match of the ACC conference will be against Florida State, February 21, here at Georgia Tech. This week, Tech competes at Alabama and Alabama-Birmingham.
The men, ranked 47th, played at Georgia this past Wednesday. The third-ranked Bulldogs downed the Jackets, 7-0. The Jackets' doubles team of Matt Cozad and Tre Harris won 8-3 at number two doubles, but Georgia rallied to win the other two doubles matches to grab the doubles point. That was all the suspense there would be as the Bulldogs swept the ensuing singles matches.
Last week, Tech picked up a 4-3 win over Georgia State.
The men have a busy week ahead, playing home matches against Alabama today, Northwestern on Sunday, and Furman on Tuesday. Alabama and Northwestern are top-25 teams.
